Sequel Sweater: Crochet Short Row Sleeve Cap Jumper Pattern

A woman wearing a blue crochet sweater with pale stripes across the chest and long sleeves stands looking to the side, hand resting on hip.

The ‘Sequel Sweater’ Crochet Pattern, the follow up pattern to the Short Stories Cardigan, is an everyday wearable crochet jumper, made with a simple stitch pattern, full of texture and drape.

This intermediate, woman’s crochet sweater design includes short row set-in sleeves, which create a tailored feel, and has a soft, open, round neckline with ribbed cuffs and hem.

You can purchase the PDF crochet pattern from Etsy, Ravelry or Love Crafts

Note that this pattern is also available as part of a bundle with the Short Stories Cardigan Pattern on Etsy and Ravelry.

Skills Used

The majority of the pattern is worked using the extended single crochet stitch. I have classed it as intermediate because the pattern includes some uncommon construction and shaping techniques to create the short row set-in sleeves.

You will be working in rows and rounds, increases, decreases, shaping, blocking, seaming, short rows, and rib stitches.

Sizes 2x-5x also use foundation single crochet stitches (technique described in pattern along with a link to a written and video tutorial).

The pattern includes complete written instructions, schematics, a photo guide for the construction

Short row set-in sleeves are worked directly from the arm holes and finished with ribbed cuffs – a video tutorial is available for this: Right handed tutorial, Left handed tutorial

Measurements and Finished Size

The pattern is written in 9 sizes covering women’s standard sizes XS-5XL; to fit chest 76-158cm / 30-63in. It is intended to be worn with 7-9cm / 2.75-3.5in positive ease on the body.

The design is gender neutral.

Detailed measurements, including 2 schematics are included in the pattern to assist you in choosing the most suitable size.

Materials

Crochet Hook

I recommend a 4mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge, for body panels and sleeves, and a 3mm crochet hook for the ribbed cuffs, hem and collar (or size needed to achieve preferred tension).

I used a Clover Amour Crochet Hook for this project – one of my favourites – learn more about different crochet hooks here.

Yarn Requirements

You will need 1350(1470, 1610, 1760, 1940, 2100, 2370, 2510, 2650) metres of 4ply / fingering weight yarn.

The item pictured uses approximately 8(9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 15, 15, 16) balls of  Drops Nord, (45% Alpaca, 30% Polyamide, 25% Wool. 50g ball = 170m/186yds)

  • The Main Colour (MC) used is Jeans Blue (Shade 16)
  • The Contrast Colour (CC) is Fog (Shade 08)

The yarn quantities given include the Contrast Colour of the same yarn. If you wish to use the colourwork as outlined in the pattern you will need approximately 20-25g of CC.

Substitution Options

Similar 4ply / fingering weight yarns will produce similar results. This pattern should work well with a range of acrylic and animal fibres.

Different fibres and yarns will produce a different finished result. Always swatch with your chosen yarn to ensure you are happy with the resulting fabric and match gauge before starting.
