General Crochet Safety
Crochet wearables such as garments, hats and scarves should never be worn if they cause discomfort or do not fit appropriately in any way. Crochet is flexible and most items can be adjusted for a correct, safe fit. Please always take the time to ensure the fit of your finished items are suitable, safe and fit for purpose.
As a maker, the finished product is your responsibility.
Below are some general safety points to consider as well as some thoughts about safety considerations when crocheting items for babies, infants and children. These are not exclusive, nor are they formal or legal guidelines. They are simply some areas I think it is important to bear in mind.
For formal guidance, please explore regulations in your jurisdiction.
General note: Children, infants and babies should never be left unattended with crocheted items.
Pom Poms: Pom poms can be a choking hazard, especially if the small pieces of yarn come loose.
I do not recommend pom poms are added to hats or other items intended for use by babies, infants, toddlers or children. Children, infants and babies should never be left unattended with pom poms.
Beads, buttons and adornments: Ensure any beads and buttons and other embellishments are securely attached so they do not constitute a choking or strangulation hazard.
Cords / drawstrings: Ensure there are no cords or drawstrings around the neck area on sweaters or hats etc as they present a risk of strangulation. Decorative cords should be safely secured so they cannot present a strangulation risk.
Choose a suitable yarn: Ensure your yarn meets fire safety regulations. Do not use specialist / fashion / novelty yarns, such as sequin or tinsel yarns for example around children where they may choke on the fibres.
Blankets: Do not use crochet blankets or any other crochet items in babies’ cribs / cots. Toes and fingers can potentially get caught in the holes.
Do not allow babies / infants to sleep whilst wearing crochet items (hats or scarves or sweaters etc) or covered with them.
I would personally also apply many of the same cautions listed here to pets. Never leave your pet unattended with crochet projects, tools or yarn.
In particular exercise caution with small scraps of yarn and your yarn ends. These are easy for animals and babies, infants and children to choke on.
Scissors, cutting tools, pins, yarn needles and any other sharp objects should be stored safely and securely, used with caution (per manufacturer guidelines) and kept out of the reach of children, infants and animals.
Materials and tools: Always follow manufacturers guidelines for the materials, equipment and tools you purchase, whether that is yarn, hooks, cutting tools (scissors or craft knives, rotary trimmers etc.), craft tools, notions or any other associated products used in the making of your creations.
Risk assessment: Whilst I endeavour to consider and mitigate potential risk factors, I cannot cover all environments and contexts in which crochet and craft projects are made and used. I recommend conducting your own risk assessment. Use your common sense, your own judgement and please ensure all your finished makes are age appropriate and fit for purpose.

I am a self taught fibre artist, tech editor and crochet designer and as such I often share my learning experiences, research and design experiments on this website. I am continually learning and I do my best to make it transparent in my writing style that I am sharing information in this context. But for avoidance of doubt, I am clarifying it here.
This blog forms a record of my journey as a crochet designer, so the content / articles reflect my understanding of the topics discussed at the time the were written.
My opinions and understanding may have developed or changed since the time of writing.
Wellbeing
In some of the articles and pages on this site, I discuss wellbeing, personal development and mental health, usually in the context of how crochet has helped my own wellbeing. Any discussions on this topic represent my personal opinion and or experience only.
