Winter Crochet: 7 free cosy crochet patterns

It’s getting to that time of year where we all want to get cosy. The crochet hats, scarves and cowls come out for us to layer up and we want to spend chilled afternoons or cosy evenings tucked under blankets.

Wit that in mind, today I want to share with you my top 7 most wintry feely free crochet patterns, in case you’re feeling the need to get on the cosy train. 

All the patterns are free on this blog, with a PDF version available to purchase. Note that in some cases, the free version is limited to one size option with the PDF containing more varieties.

1. The Connected Cowl 

I love the unusual 3d texture of this cowl. I had such fun coming up with the stitch pattern it uses.

I’m wearing a red version in the the pictures of me in my recently launched snowman hat and I’ve reignited my love for it.

It‘s comfortable, cosy and a fun, interesting make.

2. Granny Weave Blanket 

Thanks to it’s post stitches, this may be the snuggliest, squishiest blanket in town.

It’s perfect if you’re looking for a bigger winter ‘couch’ project that you can work on a little here and a little there (or through some serious box set bingeing).

The great thing about crocheting one piece centre out blankets like this is that you get to snuggle under them whilst you’re making!

3. Studio Beanie Hat Trio and matching scarf.

The adult size messy bun version of this textured crochet hat is free on the blog.

This warm and textured hat can be altered to suit all your hat wearing needs, slouch beanie, crochet toque or bun hat / ear warmer!

The studio stripe scarf uses the same texture to create an extra cosy scarf.

4. The ‘off-piste’ waffle stitch hat 

Waffle stitch might be a yarn eater but my goodness it is warm!

This hat pattern is more of an intermediate level, for those looking for something a little different (Because increasing in waffle stitch is not straightforward!).

5. The Shifting Sands Snood 

This is an extra extra cosy cowl / snood using the Jasmine Stitch, which is a beautiful crochet stitch to work.

It’s a great project for learning something new whilst cosying up. This would make a great gift too because it’s just so pretty! (I really do have a thing for the Jasmine stitch!)

6. Off the Rails Infinity Scarf 

This crochet pattern is an oldie but a goodie and works up in only an hour or two.

Plus, ribbing never goes out of style!

Made from super chunky merino yarn, I am still wearing my original version (the pink one you’ll see on the pattern page) 4 years later!

7. The Practicowl

The practical-cowl is a roll neck caplet / mini poncho / cowl-you-can-wear-under-a-coat thing.

I love this pattern and wear the one pictured a lot just around the house for a bit of extra cosy. I feel the cold so it’s nice to have something to keep my shoulders warm without the bulk of a full extra layer.

It’s on my list to make another with an even higher rollier roll neck (you can just repeat the first rounds for more roll).
