The Kidult Hat – Crochet Earflap Pom-pom Hat Pattern

I’ve been seeing lots of really cute pixie / bonnet style hats popping up on kids all over social and actual real life of late… it got me wondering why kids get all the fun stuff…

So I set about creating something part way between a bonnet and a deerstalker. I wanted ear flaps, I wanted dangly bits, I wanted pom poms… I wanted to play!

The Kidult hat was the outcome. It’s made using a similar construction method to the My Brother’s Beanie so it’s super quick and simple and I hope you have fun with it too!

The sweater you see me wearing above with the Kidult Hat is the Rainbow Smiles crochet sweater which you can learn more about here.

Skills Needed

This is a simple pattern which assumes basic crochet knowledge

The hat starts by working into a magic ring (modification given) then working in rows into the back loop only.

Materials

9mm hook

Drops Eskimo unicolour in Green, 100% wool

100g / 2 Balls / 100m / 110yds

Substitution options: Any other super chunky yarn of a similar weight

Size

This pattern makes an adult size beanie with a circumference of approximately 50cm / 20in and the length is around 27cm /10.5in to the bottom of the ear flap (excluding the dangles!). There is quite a bit of stretch in the stitch pattern so this will fit most adults.

Green crochet hat on sheepskin rug

Gauge

Pattern repeat for gauge: Row 1: hdc worked in blo, turn. Row 2: ss in blo of each hdc, turn

10cm x 10cm = 11 sts x 8 rows of pattern repeat using hook and yarn indicated.

Pattern Notes

  • This pattern uses US crochet terms
  • Numbers in brackets at the end of a row / round indicate the number of stitches in that row / round and are only given at the start of a section or where there is a change
  • Turning chains do not count as stitches
  • Unless otherwise indicated stitches should be worked in consecutive stitches
  • The hat is worked from the top down, starting by working a small crown in rounds then working at right angles around the crown in rows until the two sides of the beanie meet.

Stitches and Abreviations (US Terms)

(UK Equivalent in Brackets)

BLO = back loop only

ch = chain

hdc = half double crochet (UK half treble)

MR = magic ring – see special stitches for instructions & modification

rep = repeat

RS = Right Side

sc = single crochet (UK double crochet)

sk = skip (UK miss)

ss = slip stitch

st(s) = stitch(es)

WS = Wrong side

Special Stitches

Magic Ring (MR)

The magic ring is a technique used to start projects worked in the round, whereby you work stitches into a loop and pull the tail to close the centre. You can see a Magic Ring tutorial here.

If you do not wish to use the magic ring, modify by chaining 4 and join to the first stitch with a slip stitch to create a loop. You will then work the required number of stitches into that loop.

    Having a hard time with the seam. May be my fault, I crocheted in the back loops of the chain. Do the slip stitches go on the right side {outside) or the wrong side (inside) of the har

      I try to keep the slip stitches on the wrong side so they are hidden inside the hat – it depends a little on which direction you are working as to whether the front or back loop of the chain is most suitable. It’s quite hard to be prescriptive but have a play with different combinations and it will suddenly click!!! 🙂

    I LOVE this hat but for some reason on the 3rd vertical row, my stitch count is wrong. I’ve attempted this hat ten times. What am I doing wrong lol

      Thank you!! It’s hard to saw without knowing where you’re getting stuck but the most common mistake (which I make all the time!) is working into the slip stitch – or missing a stitch right at the end of the row.
      Might that be the issue?

    How do you think using Lion Brand Wool-Ease thick and quick would work?

      I’ve only used that a couple of times but I think it’s a similar weight – if it meets the gauge you should be good to go!!
