As if using your skills to make something for yourself somehow makes you a bad person, or encourages the idea that you are not worth investing your time in.

Well I think it’s time to call BS on that notion and I want to tell you why.

Care for yourself first

I see this kind of ‘denial of self care’ a lot, especially amongst women. There’s this idea that somehow they should be last in the queue. Honestly, it makes me really cross because it’s such an unhealthy message.

Think about those safety messages on planes;

“afix your own oxygen mask before helping others”

If you can’t breathe, you’re not going to be around long to help those you love. Looking out for your self is ESSENTIAL in achieving your goal to help others.

I see this tendency towards martyrdom in so many women. It seems like some soft of old fashioned, but enduring notion that the matriarchs should sacrifice their own needs.

Noble perhaps, but counterproductive.

Self care enables you to care for others.

I feel pretty strongly about this. I know that others may disagree with my views, and that’s okay. But I hope they will consider them for a moment nonetheless!

And if you’re not convinced by the importance of self care through crochet, next is a more rational and practical reason for crocheting for yourself.

Crocheting for those who appreciate it is not selfish!

Ever since I learned to crochet, I have loved making gifts for others. But as time went on, I realised that not everyone who receives such gifts really appreciates what goes into a handmade gift.

Who here has poured their time and love into a project, only to find that the blanket got used by the dog, or the scarf sits unworn in the back of a draw.

It is a tough one to take.

But I’ve learned, over the years, not to gift things to those who don’t appreciate it. And I don’t mean that as a judgement on those potential recipients. Crochet is not for everyone. And I’m okay with that!

Once I’d covered my appreciative friends and family with crochet goodness, I started crocheting for charity which is a truly rewarding way to invest crochet time.

I mean there are only so many hats one person can wear at once so I’m all for donating if you’re looking for a project to keep your hands busy. (Though I always ask what charities are looking for first.)

The other lesson I learned from these underwhelming gifting experiences was that I should be making stuff for me.

I love crocheting for myself and my home because I understand the love that goes into it. I know that I’m going to appreciate it. And if I don’t, well I can just frog it (guilt free) and use the yarn for something else.

I crochet for those who appreciate it. And that includes me!!!

So let’s take that idea of ‘selfish making’ and turn it into something to be celebrated.

I made this sweater for me because I know I am worth spending time and care on. So are you.

Plus, when someone says, “I love your sweater”, you get to say “Thanks, I made it myself!”

You can’t beat that feeling!
