The Spin off top: v-neck crochet t-shirt with tank top variation

The ‘Spin Off Top’ is a classic cap sleeve crochet t-shirt pattern with the option to work it up as a tank top.
The crochet pattern uses the same short row sleeve cap technique as both the short stories cardigan and the sequel sweater. This time however, it stops short of creating full sleeves in favour of adding a small cap sleeve instead.

The shaping in the underarm and the cap sleeve design ensures a nice tailored fit around the shoulders whilst also retaining a relaxed fit around the body. Perfect for a mild day.
With an easy v-neck that’s neither too deep nor too shallow, this top will make a great addition to your crochet clothing collection.
The crochet pattern also includes instructions to leave the sleeves off and crochet it up as a v-neck tank top, as seen below.
Skills Used
- This is an intermediate level pattern and knowledge of basic crochet stitches, techniques and terminology is assumed
- The pattern uses simple stitches with easy decreases, works in the Front Loop Only throughout and requires a small amount of seaming
- Chainless foundation rows are used to begin each panel (instructions given)
- Short rows are used for the sleeve caps which would make this pattern intermediate level, though a complete description of the method is given in the pattern
- The pattern is written using US crochet terminology – special stitches are explained in full and linked to a tutorial where appropriate.

Construction
- The top is worked in rows from the bottom up in 2 separate panels; back then front, each with armhole shaping for a good fit around the shoulder and back-neck
- The blocked panels are seamed using mattress stitch at the shoulders and sides and a hem and neckline trim are added
- Short row sleeve caps are worked directly into the armhole (for the t-shirt version only)
- A cuff is added to the sleeve openings to finish
