Lunar Ripples Crochet Shawl / Wrap Pattern

A blue and silver concentric striped circular shawl hangs from a fence in a winter meadow.

The Lunar Ripples crochet shawl pattern was inspired by a combination of the glow radiated from a full moon and the ripples of concentric circles created when an object is dropped into a body of water.

It’s made in two colours (or more if you prefer) with the distance between the stripes increasing with each repeat.

The circular shawl is ‘stretched’ towards an oval by the addition of short rows.

The full pattern is written out below. You can also purchase a printable ad-free PDF version of for a small fee from Ravelry, Etsy or Love Crafts

Pattern Notes

General Notes

  • Please read through the pattern and all associated notes before starting your project
  • This pattern uses standard US crochet terms (UK equivalents are given in brackets in the abbreviations list)
  • Numbers at the end of a row indicate the number of stitches in that row and are only given at the start of a section or where there is a change
  • Turning chains do not count as stitches
  • Instructions written after asterisks (* and/or **) should be repeated as indicated
  • Instructions written between [square brackets] should be worked the specific number of times instructed
  • Instructions in (round brackets) should be worked in the same stitch
  • Change colours on the last pull through of the last stitch of the previous row
  • You can either carry the yarn up the side over the colour changes or fasten off after each one (you will add a border over the row ends) – I carried the yarn for the first few colour changes where there were only a few rows between, but as the shawl progressed, I fastened off with each change
  • There is no wrong or right side

Construction

  • This shawl is made in rows, turning at the end of each row
  • The way the increases are created varies as the pattern progresses – notes have been added throughout the pattern elaborating on this
  • As it grows you will work short rows at the outer edges so that the shawl ends up wider than it is deep
  • For ease of reading and to accommodate the changes in increase techniques and construction, the pattern is written in three sections
  • Each section starts with a brief overview of how you will be working in that section

Skills Used

  • Knowledge of basic crochet stitches, techniques and terminology is assumed
  • You’ll work in front loops only, skip stitches and work into chain spaces
  • Although this pattern uses single crochet and chains throughout, the stitch placement is important, so I would class it as an intermediate level pattern
  • This pattern also uses short rows in the final section – you may find stitch markers help you with this

Materials

Hook

4.5mm crochet hook or size needed to meet gauge. I used a clover amour 4.5mm hook.

Yarn

Approximately 420g/1800m/1980yds 4ply yarn in total.

The item pictured uses John Arbon Knit by Numbers, 4ply, 100% Organically farmed Merino Wool, 100g skein = 400m/440yds:

Yarn A: 1 ball x Knit By Numbers Shade 127 (light blue-grey)  – approx 70g/280m/310yds used

Yarn B: 4 balls x Knit By Numbers 123 (dark blue) – approx 350g/1400m/1540yds used

Substitution Options: A similar 4ply / fingering weight yarn which meets gauge should make a suitable substitute for this project. Using different fibres will create a different finished effect and stitch definition. You may find this post useful when choosing yarn.

Other

Yarn needle, scissors and a stitch marker.

I recommend blocking this shawl, so a blocking board and pins are suggested.

You can learn more about blocking here.

How to purchase a Dora Does crochet pattern:

I sell my PDF crochet patterns in my Etsy, Ravelry and Love Crafts stores. You can purchase this pattern on any of these platforms, depending on your preference. Simply click the relevant links throughout this pattern page to be taken to the listing, or visit the store homepages in the links at the start of this paragraph.

Measurements & Finished Size

Before blocking, the shawl measured 170cm in wingspan and 70cm deep

After blocking, the shawl measured 200cm in wingspan and 73cm deep

Section 1 measured approximately 30cm wide and 15cm deep before blocking. You may wish to use this measurement to check your progress after Section 1.

Gauge

Although gauge is not essential in this pattern, differences in gauge will impact the size of your finished work.

Gauge for single crochet in front loops

18 stitches and 19 rows over 10cm of single crochet worked in the front loop only using a 4.5mm hook or size needed to obtain gauge.

Note that some testers chose to go down a hook size for section 1. If you are newer to working in front loops, you may find this helps create a more opaque fabric.

Gauge for v-stitch

17 sts and 24 rows in 10cm of unblocked single crochet v-st (see special stitches) using a 4.5mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge.

Stitches & Abbreviations: US terms

(UK Equivalent in Brackets)

  • ch = chain
  • ch-sp(s) = chain space(s)
  • FLO = front loop only
  • MR = magic ring (tutorial here) – modification given in pattern
  • PM = place marker
  • rep = repeat
  • sc = single crochet (UK double crochet)
  • sc FLO = single crochet in the front loop only (UK double crochet in front loop only)
  • sk = skip (UK miss)
  • sp(s) = space(s)
  • ss = slip stitch
  • st(s) = stitch(es)
  • v-st = single crochet v stitch (see special stitches)
  • v-st-inc = v stitch increase (see special stitches)

Special Stitches

Single crochet v-stitch (v-st)

A significant part of this pattern (all the dark blue / Yarn B you see pictured) is made using a single crochet v stitch, sometimes known as spider stitch. For this pattern we will refer to it as ‘v-st’:

V-st: Work (1sc, ch1, 1sc) into the same space.

You can find a general tutorial for the single crochet v-st / spider st here. (Note that the tutorial uses a different approach to turning at the row ends than is used in this pattern.)

Stitch counts

On rows using the v-sts I have given stitch counts in terms of total stitches and number of v-sts as it’s easier to count the v-sts than individual stitches. Each v-st counts as 2 sts as the ch1-sp is not counted.

Each v-st row starts with 1 sc which added to the v-stitch count.

For example: 97 sts / 48 v-sts, 1 sc

V-stitch increase (v-st-inc)

Increases in the v-st pattern when working into v-stitch rows are made as follows:

V-st-inc: v-st in the first sc of v-st below, sk ch1-sp, v-st in the second sc of the same v-st below

Increases in the v-st pattern when working into rows of sc are made by working 2 v-sts next to each other in consecutive stitches (instead of skipping a stitch between them). Instructions for this kind of increase will be broken down in the pattern.

The Pattern

Section 1

In this section you will work the ‘moon’ which is crocheted as a semi-circle. You will increase by 3 sts each row until row 10 where you will switch to increasing by 6 sts every other row.

At Row 25, you will increase by 12 sts and work the last 3 rounds of this section without increasing – this is to create a more rounded shape.

Using Yarn A, make a MR;

Row 1: 4sc in MR (or ch2 and work 4sc in second ch from hook if you prefer not to use MR), do not join (the pattern is worked in rows, not rounds), turn. 4 sts

Row 2: Ch1 (does not count as a st here or throughout),1sc FLO in first st, 2sc FLO in each st to end, turn. 7 sts

Row 3: Ch1,1sc FLO in first st, *2sc FLO in next st, 1sc FLO in next st; rep from * to end, turn. 10 sts

Row 4: Ch1,1sc FLO in first st, *2sc FLO in next st, 1sc FLO in next 2 sts; rep from * to end, turn. 13 sts

Section 2

This section you will start to work the ‘sky’ with the ripples being worked with an increasing number of ‘sky’ rows between them.

You are still working in semi-circle, but the cadence of the increases will change. You will work increases at the start of each row over two consecutive rows, then work two rows without increases.

A semi-oval striped crochet shawl in silver and dark blue hangs from a wire fence.

From this stage forward, I have added the abbreviation ‘inc’ on the increase rows to make it easier to keep track of where you are increasing.

Change to Yarn B (for 2 rows)

Row 29 (inc): Ch1, 1sc in first st, *[sk next st, v-st in next st] 6 times, v-st in next 2 sts; rep from * twice more (3 times in total), **sk next st, v-st in next st; rep from ** to end, turn. 91 sts / 45 v-sts, 1 sc

Row 30 (inc): Ch1, 1sc in first ch1-sp, [v-st in each of next 6 ch1-sp, v-st-inc] 3 times, v-st in each ch1-sp to end, sk next sc, v-st in last st, turn. 97 sts / 48 v-sts, 1 sc

Change to Yarn A

When working Yarn A rows of sc FLO into rows of Yarn B v-st, you will always ignore the ch1-sps of the v-st and work into the sc only – here and throughout.

Row 31: Ch1, 1sc FLO in each sc to end (sk all ch1-sps), turn. 97 sts

Row 32: Ch1, 1sc FLO of each st to end, turn

Section 3

In this last section you’ll be increasing by 8 sts at over the first part of two consecutive rows (where you were increasing by 6 previously) and will leave 4 complete rows between the increases (i.e. you’ll increase by 16 sts over 6 rows.)

This is also where the short row section begins. The short rows are abbreviated to SR and are worked in pairs at either edge of the shawl. I have named these A for the first side and B for the second. They are worked on one side first then the other.

You may find it helpful to use stitch markers in the short row sections and I have added guidance in the instructions on where to place them.
