Crochet blankets inspired by the granny square: centre-out crochet patterns
Traditionally, Granny Squares are made from the centre outwards, increasing by the same amount each round. You can continue in the same pattern until you reach your desired size, whether that be a small square to join with others or a large blanket of continual granny stitches.
The classic centre out structure is incredibly versatile, not only for playing with colours using the granny stitch, but also with other crochet stitches and textures.
This crochet pattern round-up includes a range of crochet blanket patterns inspired by the classic granny square construction.
What is a crochet a granny square and how do you make one?
First things first, and for those who are newer to granny squares, lets take a look at what the granny square is.
You can find a full classic granny square tutorial here, but to give you a summary, granny squares start off with 4 clusters of 3 double crochets (US crochet terms) with a chain 2 (or sometimes a chain 1) between them.
The chains create the corners and are where the increases (3 double crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet) are made each round.
You also work clusters of 3 double crochet all the way along the sides, each made between the clusters on the previous rounds. It is these clusters of 3 stitches which create the classic granny stitch effect.
Sometimes there are chain ones between the clusters but not always. As with anything in crochet, there are many ways to approach the same techniques!
To give you a clear visual, the image below shows a classic granny square with each round having been made in a different colour of yarn.

Centre out crochet blanket patterns
So with that covered, lets look at some crochet blanket patterns inspired by the humble granny.
1. Granny Weave crochet blanket Pattern
This pattern is what you get when you cross a glass granny square with the textured basketweave stitch… super cosy and snuggly, perfect for cozy couch time!
2. Random rounds
A granny square, but make it moss stitch and use any of your leftover yarn!
The Random Rounds crochet blanket was designed as a stash busting crochet pattern using one of my all time favourite crochet stitches. For this one I used up a whole bunch of leftover yarn in various yarn weights. This one will always be a truly unique crochet blanket.
3. Random rectangles
Another stash busting design, ‘Random Rectangles’ is the follow up to the Random Rounds blanket. This time, the blanket is a rectangular throw style and uses a solid granny stitch pattern (rather than the classic clusters).
It’s huge and snuggly and used up all the remnants of double knit yarn I had. It can also be made in other yarn weights.

4. Big love and little love linked crochet stitch squares
The big and little love patterns give you all the options. The pattern is essentially a solid granny square but using linked crochet stitches.
There is no turning in this pattern which gives it a different texture on each side, with the Right Side having a Tunisian Crochet feel.
5. Bobble pop
One of my favourite fun crochet blanket patterns is the bobble pop blanket. Bobbles are always good fun to crochet, and circles are just the bringers of joy!
The bobble pop granny inspired crochet blanket is made up of circular motifs which are squared off using the granny square technique and joined together to form a blanket throw of any size and shape you desire!
I hope you have found this a nice whistle stop tour of what you can do with just a few tweaks to the classic crochet granny square construction!
Happy Hooking
