Triptych Twist – a crochet cable blanket pattern

The triptych twist crochet braided cable blanket throw rests over a sofa back and seat.

Ever since the end of last year I’ve been obsessing over crochet cables. On and off since then, I’ve been working on my take on the classic crochet cable blanket pattern. Today, I’m super excited to finally release this pattern, the Triptych Twist, into the crochet world.

The Triptych Twist crochet blanket pattern has three widths of alternating crocheted cable braids which align to form a unique cable-work crochet design.

You can purchase the PDF Triptych Twist crochet blanket pattern from Ravelry, Etsy or Love Crafts.

About the crochet cable blanket design

My main goal with this pattern was to give a nod to traditional Aran fisherman pattern style whilst ensuring the design included nice smooth curves in the crocheted braided cables. I didn’t want any of that angular or jagged shaping you sometimes see in crochet cables.

When I started researching crochet cables, I learned a ton of new techniques to create them and this led to my first crochet cable throw pattern design of the year, the fisherman’s nap blanket, which doesn’t use any post stitches at all.

However, I still wanted to create a crochet throw pattern using post stitch cables, so I persevered and Triptych Twist was the result.

Triptych is a word that can describe pieces of art which are made up from 3 sections. Because of the theme of repetitions of three throughout this pattern; three different cable widths with a layout that repeats three times, it just seemed right. Three is the magic number after all…

This pattern is not nearly as complex to work as it looks and I found the pattern very relaxing to crochet, once I got used to the row repeats (and after all the design work of course).

It really is one of those projects that make you want to crochet just one more row…

Skills Used

This is an intermediate level crochet throw pattern because of the cables, but the majority of the blanket uses simple stitches.

The cables are made with front post extended stitches which are described in full along with a photo guide and video tutorial. You can also find a free photo and video tutorial for crossed cable crochet stitches here.

The pattern also includes a crochet stitch chart.

As with all Dora Does crochet patterns, knowledge of basic crochet stitches, techniques and terminology is assumed for this design.

The blanket pattern uses extended stitches, front post stitches, crossed cable stitches, basic decreases as well as single and double crochets.

The special stitches section includes written descriptions of all the non-basic stitches, including the crossed cables and extended crochet stitches.

The border requires working into the front loops.

You can learn the basics of extended crochet stitches here.

Materials

Crochet Hook

The Triptych Twist crochet throw pattern is worked with an aran or worsted weight yarn, and I found a 5.5mm crochet hook gave me the right tension.

I used my clover amour crochet hook, as is usually my go to.

Yarn Requirements

For the crochet throw pattern as pictured, you will need approximately 2640m/2900yds of aran or worsted weight yarn.

The item pictured used approximately 1760g or 36 x 50 gram balls of Drops Nepal, Aran weight yarn, 65% wool, 35% Alpaca, 50g ball = 75m/83yds. Shade Chalk (8915).

Yarn substitution Options

This blanket is open to substituting with other wool or acrylic fibres. A similar aran or worsted weight yarn will produce a similar effect. Different fibres and yarns will produce a different finished result.

You may find this post useful when choosing yarn.

The yarn I used has a relatively low meterage per gram for worsted weight / aran yarn, just 75m per 50g or 150m per 100g. It is similar in yarn length per gram to the popular Lion Brand Vanna’s choice which has 156m per 100g.

You could try an acrylic or other blend yarn which has a higher meterage per ball.

Below are approximate yarn amounts for some popular ‘big box’ aran / worsted weight yarns which are generally widely available;

Note that your gauge may vary with these different yarns so the size of your final blanket may also vary. Always check your ball band for up to date yarn amounts per ball.

Other Materials & Notions

Yarn needle, scissors and a tape measure

13 stitch markers or contrasting yarn scraps for the cable set-up section

You may wish to block this project, in which case I recommend a blocking board and pins.

Learn more about blocking here.

Finished Size

The finished blanket measures approximately 150cm/60in long by 120cm/48in wide which is a typical small throw size. (But still a good size sofa throw / single bed size blanket.)

I have written a guide to crochet blanket / throw sizes here if you want more information about crochet blanket sizing.

It is fairly straightforward to adjust the length of the pattern by working more or fewer pattern repeats.

Changing the width is less straightforward if you want to retain the cable repeat pattern as it uses rather a large stitch multiple (detailed in the pattern).
