Triple Check Wrap: A 3-colour, textured crochet scarf pattern

The ‘Triple check’ wrap is a large, textured crochet scarf pattern made with 3 colours and inspired by woven textures, tweeds and plaids.

The pattern uses techniques similar to those seen in mosaic and interlocking crochet to create a cozy modern crochet fabric that’s satisfying to make.

Skills Used

I would class this wrap pattern as intermediate level. It uses simple stitches, but accurate stitch placement and colourwork are essential to getting a good finished result.

  • Knowledge of basic crochet stitches, techniques and terminology is assumed
  • A video tutorial is included which demonstrates the 5 row pattern repeat
  • Working in rows, skipping stitches, working into row ends (for border)
  • Working with 3 colours cast on at once, alternating between them on different rows
  • Working into stitches 3 rows down (like mosaic crochet) and crocheting in front and behind stitches (as with interlocking and some mosaic crochet)

Materials

Crochet Hook

You will need a 5mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge. I used my clover amour hook.

Because of the nature of the stitch pattern, I used a larger hook than is typically when working with a sport or fingering weight yarn. Do bear this in mind if adjusting your yarn weight.

Yarn Requirements

You will require 3 x 100g skeins of sport-weight yarn 

The sample shown used 3 skeins of John Arbon Textiles, Yarnadelic Sport, 100% Falklands Corriedale, 100g=333m, shades and quantities used as follows:

  • Yarn A: Indigo Dust (approximately 320m used)
  • Yarn B: Of my Hands (approximately 250m used)
  • Yarn C: Woman in Blue (approximately 250m used)

I had around 5g of Yarn A remaining (which was the colour used for the border) and around 25g of each of Yarn B and C. This gives a total meterage of about 820m for the whole project.

Yarn Substitution Options

Different fibres and yarns will produce a different finished result. I think this pattern would work well with many wool or wool blend yarns. The yarn I used in the sample is classed as a sport weight / heavy 4ply, so a similar weight 4 ply would work well. For my original swatch, used to design the stitch pattern, I used Drops Nord, a 4 ply / fingering weight yarn made up of 45% Alpaca, 30% Polyamide and 25% wool and I liked the finish this created. 

You could also substitute with double knit yarn (noting the yarn quantity requirements will change), perhaps removing a couple of the stitch multiples to account for the different weight. 

The type of fibre you use will impact the stitch definition and final look of the wrap so  do ensure you make and block a swatch to check you like how the pattern works up with your chosen yarn. You may find this post useful when choosing yarn.

Measurements and Finished Size

  • The finished wrap measures 184cm/72in long and 30cm/12in wide after being blocked 
  • Before blocking it measured 156cm/62in long and 26cm/10in wide, so there is quite a lot of stretch through the rows during blocking
  • Guidance on adjusting the size of the scarf is given, along with stitch multiple information, in the PDF pattern.
