Free Crochet Scoodie Pattern: Crochet scarf with a rounded hood
The ’studio scoodie’ (scarf with a hood) is a super warm and cosy hooded scarf.
Unlike many crochet scoodies out there, the hood on this one has a rounded shape and no sharp angle at the back of your head; i.e., it’s more than just a folded scarf with a little seam in the centre.
I named this crochet pattern the Studio Scoodie because the texture reminded me of that egg box type sound proofing on studio walls.
The soft curved hood is what brings a unique finish to this scoodie. It’s extra long for all the warmth and cozy blanket scarf aesthetic.
AND, you can turn it round and wear it with the hood draped at the front like a shawl to give you a bit of extra warmth on the top of your chest.
I love it’s versatility and you can too if you keep reading for the free pattern

Pattern Notes
- Please read through the pattern and all associated notes before starting your project
- This pattern uses US crochet terms (UK equivalents are given in brackets in the abbreviations list)
- Numbers at the end of a row indicate the number of stitches in that row and are only given at the start of a section or where there is a change
- Turning chains to not count as stitches
- Instructions written after *asterisks should be repeated as indicated
- Instructions written between [square brackets] should be repeated the number of times indicated
- Unless otherwise indicated stitches should be worked in consecutive stitches
Skills Used
I have classed this scoodie as advanced beginner / intermediate. It involves a simple stitch repeat with some decreases. All stitches are explained fully in the pattern.
- Knowledge of basic crochet stitches, techniques and terminology is assumed
- The pattern uses extended stitches (see special stitches) and requires attention to stitch placement, in particular as you start to shape the hood
- This is a relatively straightforward project with a few little challenges along the way to keep you on your toes!
Pattern Repeat
- The pattern is worked by alternating extended double crochet (edc) and half double crochet (hdc) stitches along the length of the scarf, turning at the end and repeating so that the hdc is worked into the top of the edc from the row below and the edc is worked into the top of the hdc (the difference in height is what creates the texture).
- I would recommend checking after your first row that your alternation of stitches is correct. This is fairly easy to eyeball but it’s important that it’s right because it sets up the rest of the project.
- After the first row or so, you will be able to see from the stitch shape whether you should be working an hdc or edc.
Construction
To create the hood shape, the pattern places decreases (referred to as edc2tog as described in detail below) along the length of the scoodie over the last few rows and then adds a shorter row, the second part of which is worked as Join As You Go (jayg)to create a seam down the back of the hood. If you don’t like the jayg method then you can skip it and just sew the two sides together. It’s only 10 stitches! I’ve made it clear in the pattern where this applies, but it’s really not as complicated as it sounds.
Materials
Crochet hook: 6mm / size J crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge
I used my clover amour hook.
Yarn:
You will need approximately 750m/680 yds of Medium worsted weight yarn.
For the scoodie pictured, I used 400g/4 skeins of Lion Brand Vanna’s choice , 100% acrylic, 100g = 156m/171yds
Shad: Fisherman (098)
Substitution Options:
A similar worsted weight yarn will create a similar effect Different fibres and yarns will produce a different finished result.
You may find this post useful when choosing yarn.
Other Materials & Notions:
Yarn needle, scissors and a tape measure
Finished size
The finished scoodie measures around 200cm/80in long by 25cm/10in wide

- fsc = foundation single crochet (see special stitches)
- hdc = half double crochet

Special Stitches
Foundation Single Crochet (fsc)
Ch2, insert hook into 2nd chain from hook, yo and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook). *Yo and pull through 1 loop (this creates the base stitch of the next fsc), yo and pull through 2 loops to complete the st. To start the next st, insert the hook into the ‘v’ of the base stitch, yo and pull up a loop. Repeat from * for required number of sts.
You can find more details on foundation rows including a tutorial here. If you struggle with this technique it can be replaced with making a chain of the number of stitches plus 1, then work 1sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and each chain across to achieve the required number of sts.
Extended Double Crochet (edc)
This is very similar to a double crochet but with a small extra step.
Yo, insert hook, yo, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through one loop (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through two loops (2 loops on hook), yo, pull through two loops.
You can find a full written and video tutorial for both the edc and edc2tog here.
Extended Double Crochet 2 Together (edc2tog)
This is a method of decreasing in this stitch pattern.
Yo, insert hook, yo, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through 1 loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook). Skip next stitch. Yo, insert hook into next stitch, yo, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook), yo pull through 1 loop (4 loops on hook), yo, pull through 2 loops (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yo, pull through 2 loops to complete the stitch.
Single Crochet 3 Together (sc3tog)
Insert hook, yo, pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), insert hook into next st, yo, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), insert hook into next st, yo, pull up a loop (4 loops in hook) yo, pull through 4 loops to complete the stitch.
Gauge
8 rows x 12 stitches in 10cm of pattern repeat (see previous notes) using a 6mm hook or size needed to obtain gauge.
Whilst gage is not vital in this project I would recommend making a small gage swatch just so you get the feel of the pattern.

The Studio Scoodie Pattern
Row 1: Make 241fsc (or ch 242 , sc in the second ch from hook and across to the end), turn. 241 sts
Row 2: Ch3, 1edc in first st, *1hdc in next st, 1edc in next st; rep from * to end, finishing on an edc (this is the stitch repeat which continues throughout the pattern), turn. 241 sts

Fasten off
Creating the Hood
Now to finish the hood by creating the back seam.
Continue to work as if you had turned the piece at the end of Row 23.
Row 24:
Skip the first 104 sts and join your yarn in the next st;
Starting in the same st you joined the yarn, 1sc, [1edc, 1hdc] 5 times, 1sc into the sc3tog from the last round at the centre of the scoodie, fold your scoodie in half.
The next part of the row will create the back seam of the hood and you can either continue using join as you go or work the pattern repeat without joining and stitch the seam. Instructions for both options are given below.
If you are using join as you go (jayg):
Continuing on Row 24, and joining to the corresponding stitch on the opposite side of the hood, [1edc, 1hdc] 5 times, then without joining, 1sc in next st.
Fasten off
If you are not using jayg:
Continuing on Row 24, [1edc, 1hdc] 5 times, 1sc in next st.
Fasten off
Sew the two sides (matching up the 10 edc and hdc sts on each side) together to create the back seam of the hood.
Finishing
To finish, work a row of sc along the back edge of the scoodie, working one into the base of the seam to help secure it. (209 sts)
Fasten off and sew in any remaining ends.

Hi.i’m a little confused about the last part: creating the hood..where do you crochet those : 1 sc[ 1hdc ..]?
Hi, I’m not sure which part of the pattern you’re referring to as there are a couple of ways to join the hood. Could you be a bit more specific about which row / instruction you mean? Thanks. Dora
this is exactly what I’ve been looking for and even was going to try my hand at designing my own because I couldn’t find any. Most scoodies have that pointed hood part and I was looking for the rounded one you have here. Thank you so much for sharing this!
Thank you, and you’re welcome! It’s nice to know I wasn’t the only one having that issue! ?
