The Lark Cardigan: A modified drop, cozy crochet colourwork cardigan

The Lark cardigan has a similar colourwork and construction style to the Lark sweater, with a few tweaks here and there.

The Lark Cardigan is a cozy, modified drop, crochet cardigan with a rounded neckline,  and fun colour-work pattern across the chest and sleeves. A great opportunity to get adventurous with colour combinations and bring a pop of colour-work to your Autumn / Winter wardrobe.

Skills Used

I would class the LarkCardigan as an intermediate level crochet pattern though there is support, in the form of video and photo tutorials throughout, so if you’re game for it then beginners with patience and an adventurous spirit should be able to tackle it!

You will use the following skills:

Materials needed

Crochet Hook

You will need a 4mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge. I used my clover amour hook.

Yarn Requirements

You will require approximately 1280(1380, 1490, 1670, 1730, 1990, 2030, 2260, 2320)m of  double knit yarn for sizes XS(S, M, L, 1X, 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X) respectively.

Below you will find the split between the Main Colour and Contrast Colour yarn requirements.

Main Colour Yarn:

You will need approximately 905(975, 1035, 1190, 1220, 1410, 1400, 1460, 1470)m of Main Colour (MC): Cascade Yarns 220 Super-wash Merino, 100% Superwash Merino Wool, 100g ball =200m/220 yds in Rich Brown – Shade 03.

Contrast Colour Yarn:

You will need approximately 375(405, 455, 480, 510, 580, 630, 800, 850)m of Contrast Colours (CC): King Cole Merino Blend DK, 100% Pure New Wool, 50g ball=104m/113yds, in shades:

  • 1(1, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2) balls(s) CC1: Pale Pink – Shade 1532
  • 1(1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 2) ball(s) CC2: Raspberry – Shade 907 
  • 1(1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 2) ball(s) CC3: Mustard – Shade 855
  • 1(1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2) ball(s) CC4: Marina – Shade 3810
  • 1(1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2) ball(s) CC5: Aran – Shade 46

Yarn Substitution Options

Similar double knit yarns which match the blocked gauge will work for this pattern. Different fibres and yarns will produce a different finished result.

The yarn I used was quite a heavy DK with a smaller meterage per ball than is typical (indeed after the fact, I have seen it listed as a worsted on some sites – even though I purchased it as a DK!), so check the meterage when selecting yarn and learn more about yarn weights here. With a finer DK (or possibly even a sport weight yarn which matches gauge) you will get more drape in your cardigan.

Wool can stretch with blocking, so block your swatch to ensure you match gauge after blocking. You may find this post useful when choosing yarn.

Measurements & Finished Size

The pattern is written in 9 women’s sizes with a finished bust size (to the nearest cm) as follows: 94(101, 113, 122, 131, 141, 150, 162, 171) for sizes XS(S, M, L, 1X, 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X). More detailed measurements are given in the pattern, including a schematic.

Guidance on how to adjust various aspects of the size and fit is included in the pattern.

Below is some additional information about the size and fit of the cardigan:

  • The long sleeve, round necked cardigan is designed to be a relaxed fit with around 15cm/6in of positive ease on the body (13-17cm depending on size selected) – Learn about ease here
  • The sizing uses the Craft Yarn Council women’s size standards for sizes XS-5XL.
  • I’ve done something a little different with this design and made the fronts more spacious to accommodate the bust – this means more of the positive ease is at the front – the adjustment suggestions gives more detail if you want to adapt this.
  • The item you see pictured is a size S worn by me, UK size 10 / US size 6, 5ft 1in
