Fluff it: A lightweight fluffy crochet sweater pattern

An ice blue fluffy crochet v-neck sweater with relaxed sleeves that are lust less than 3/4 length hangs against a white wall.

‘Fluff it’ is a light-weight, vertically ribbed crochet sweater made from fluffy mohair or suri alpaca yarn. With a relaxed fit and shallow, gentle v-neck, this quick and simple crochet pullover is constructed from just two panels, making it easy to customise for different body and sleeve lengths.

You can purchase the PDF crochet pattern from Etsy, Ravelry or Love Crafts.

Skills Used

This is a relatively easy crochet sweater pattern with some interesting techniques that you may not be used to, such as working with a much larger hook than is typical for the yarn weight.

  • Knowledge of basic crochet stitches, techniques and terminology is assumed
  • Working in rows with increases and decreases
  • Working consistently with front post stitches – I have a Right handed tutorial and Left handed tutorial for the stitch pattern I use in this design.

How the top is constructed

The top is crocheted in two pieces (front and back) from side to side. You will make simple increases and decreases for the body, shoulder and neckline shaping as you work across.

The two pieces are seamed across the shoulders / sleeves and side and underarm. A simple trim is added to the neck, hem and cuffs to finish

The garment has a gentle shoulder slope for a better fit – you can learn more about shoulder slopes in garments here

The pattern also includes guidance on how to adjust the pattern for a personalised fit, including changing the length of the body and the sleeves. This includes an explanation of the changes I made for the two other pink samples you see pictured.

Materials

Crochet Hook

You will need an 8mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge.

I used a Clover Amour Crochet Hook for this project – one of my favourites – learn more about different crochet hooks here.

Yarn Requirements

For the main sweater, you will need approximately 630(675, 775, 820, 880, 990, 1050, 1150, 1250)m of fingering weight Suri Alpaca fluff or two strands of lace-weight Kid Silk Mohair held double, or equivalent yarn which meets gauge.

The yarns used in the samples are as follows:

  • The main Sweater uses: 2(2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 4) balls of Mamie and Florrie, Baby Suri Alpaca, 100% Alpaca, in shade ‘Ice swim at Combs’.100g = 400m

Yarn Substitution Options

Different fibres and yarns will produce a different finished result.

In the two additional samples I substituted 2 strands of lace-weight mohair for the fingering weight alpaca. This worked well as a substitute but it is worth allowing a little extra yarn (perhaps 5%) if holding too strands double as this can increase the meterage required.

If you would like ideas for yarn substitutions, you may wish to watch the video I put together to support the Squish it Sweater which looks at ways to substitute fluffy yarns. It starts with a different yarn weight but the same considerations stand.

You may wish to substitute with a non fluffy yarn, or one strand of fluff with one strand of lace-weight in another fibre. If this is the case, swatch carefully and think about how the additional weight will impact the structure of the sweater; it may lead it to stretch across the body and sleeves so you may want to think about sizing down. But play with your swatch and make your decisions according to that.

Other Materials & Notions

  • Yarn needle, scissors and a tape measure
  • 4 stitch markers to mark edges of shoulder seam to assist with joining
  • You may wish to block this project, in which case I recommend a Blocking board and pins. I gave the finished sweater a very gentle steam block which slightly increased my stitch gauge from 10.5 to 10 sts in 10cm but did not impact my row gauge.

Learn more about blocking here.

Measurements and Finished Sizes

The ‘Fluff-it’ sweater is a relaxed fit pullover with mid length sleeves (2/3 length if that’s a think?) and shallow, gentle v-neck.

The crochet pattern is offered in 9 women’s sizes to fit bust 76-158cm, with a finished bust of 93-173cm. The sweater is designed to drop to the top of the hip with 12-19cm positive ease.

The body is designed to drop to the bottom of the waist / top of the hip in the main sweater. The two pink samples have been cropped to different shorter lengths. The tee had just 3 stitches taken off the bottom and the tank top had 6 stitches taken off for a much more cropped design.

Additional measurements and a sizing schematic is included in the pattern. The pattern also offers suggestions for adjusting the size for a custom fit.
