Fisherman’s nap aran crochet cable blanket (with no post stitches!)

A caramel colour wool crochet cable blanket is draped over a garden chair in front of a yellow brick house.

The fisherman’s nap crochet cable blanket pattern uses lesser known traditional fisherman’s crochet cable techniques to create a classic looking cable blanket.

With this pattern, you will learn to crochet this cosy aran style blanket without using a single front or back post (UK raised) stitch.

You can purchase the PDF crochet pattern for this blanket from Ravelry, Love Crafts or Etsy.

You can read more about the personal significance of this pattern in this post.

The fisherman’s nap pattern creates a traditional looking warm and cuddly blanket, perfect for chilling on the sofa or keeping cosy on a cool evening.

It’s an intermediate level pattern which becomes easier to work as you learn the unique and fun cable stitch pattern.

Skills Used

I would class this as an intermediate level blanket pattern, though once you learn the special stitches it is fairly straightforward. You can learn more about how I approach difficulty levels here.

The pattern assumes knowledge of basic crochet stitches, techniques and terminology.

It uses two special stitches in combination, the knurl stitch and a twisted cable stitch, which are described in written form in the pattern. Neither of these stitches use front or back post stitches which is fairly rare for a cabled crochet blanket.

I found these stitches in a fabulous vintage stitch directory, called New Directions in Crochet by Anne Rabun Ough and made adjustments to them to suit what I wanted to achieve with this pattern.

You can also find a tutorial for the crochet knurl stitch here (it’s a modification of the crab stitch / reverse single crochet) and a tutorial for the twisted cable crochet stitch here. Each tutorial includes written instructions, a photo guide and video tutorial (left and right handed with closed captions)

The two special stitches are worked in combination with US single crochet and half double crochets, and you’ll need to work in front and back loops in places.

This is an intermediate level pattern but once you learn the special stitches is fairly straightforward

Note that this blanket is not designed as a baby blanket and is intended for adult use only.

Materials

Crochet Hook

5.5mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge

I used my clover amour hook.

Yarn

You will need approximately1400g or 2940m/3240yds of aran/worsted weight yarn.

The item pictured used approximately 3.5 balls of Sirdar bonus aran with wool, 80% acrylic, 20% wool, 400g ball = 840m / 920 yds. Shade Alpine (0842).

The adjustment section after the pattern includes approximate yarn amounts for different sized blankets.

Substitution Options:

A similar aran / worsted weight yarn will work for this project. Different fibres and yarns will produce a different finished result.

You may find this post useful when choosing yarn.

Other Materials & Notions

  • Yarn needle, scissors and a tape measure
  • 4 stitch markers to mark corners when working the border – you may also find stitch markers useful to mark the start and end of the rows when working the knurl stitch
  • I encourage you to block this project, in which case I recommend a blocking board and pins.

You can learn more about blocking here.

Measurements and finished size

After a gentle steam blocking to even out the tension, the finished blanket pictured measures 130cm long (stitches) by 115cm wide (so it’s not quite square).

The blanket is worked in rows from side to side so the number of stitches represents the length of the blanket and the number of rows the width.

I have added an adjustment section at the end of the pattern which includes alternative stitch and row repeat counts to create the blanket in various sizes.

The alternate sizes range from 100x72cm to 210x170cm and include approximate yarn requirements for different sizes.
