The Happy Face Cloth – Free Crochet Washcloth Pattern

Cat looking at yellow and black pachyderm face crochet cloth on grey floor

In my continued effort to bust my way through my stash, I have put together a super quick cotton crochet face cloth pattern using some left over yarn.

This is one of those ideas which have been going around in my mind for a while, so when rummaging through my stash and noticing the Yellow and Black Cotton, I decided to just sit down and do it!

Only now I want to make a whole bunch of emoji’s… another day perhaps!

This may not be the most elegant of patterns but it will be covered in my make up come tonight so I’m not too worried!

Reusable cloths, whether for the face or the floor are a really simple way to cut down on waste in the home. Disposable wipes may be convenient, but they are a bit of a horror both for the sewage systems and environment. So any opportunity to replace them works for me!

Shall we get to it?

Materials

I used around 15-20g of Lily Sugar n Cream Solids in Black and Yellow which I had left in my stash.

This is a worsted weight yarn but the pattern would work with aran or dk so go with whatever is in your stash!

You can learn about substituting yarn in this article.

I used a 5.5mm crochet hook. You’ll want to use something on the large size for your yarn to make sure your cloth has drape… we’re not looking for super tight stitching here.

Skills Needed

This is a really simple pattern working with US single and double crochet and bobble stitches.

You will need to be able to work in rounds and change colours.

Finished Size

The finished size of the cloth is around 22cm / 9inches in diameter.

I didn’t make a gauge swatch for this pattern as size isn’t particularly important. But the 7 rows of double crochet measure 10cm / 4in if that puts you on the right track.

Pattern Notes

  • Numbers in brackets at the end of the round represent the number of stitches in that round
  • The pattern is worked in the round, turning at the end of each round
  • Turning chains do not count as stitches
  • Instructions after *asterisks should be repeated as described
  • Instructions between [square brackets] should be repeated the specific number of times stated
  • Instructions between (round brackets) should be worked in the same st
  • For the colour work, I carried the yellow and fastened my yarn off between the black sections
