I Made This Blanket – Crochet Blanket

I designed this blanket as a tribute to all you talented makers (yes, I’m talking to you!).
I wanted to give you a way to be able to stand up and proudly say “I MADE THIS”!
I’m so passionate about encouraging the tribe of generous gifted, inspirational creators out there to celebrate themselves! As makers, we rarely give ourselves credit for what we do.
With this statement blanket I wanted to enable you wonderful people to create a permanent reminder for you and those around you of your talent and skill! So give yourself a big pat on the back and be proud of the work you put into this and all of your creations!

Pattern Notes
General Notes
- Please read through the pattern and all associated notes before starting your project
- This pattern uses standard US crochet terminology (UK equivalents are given in brackets in the abbreviations list where applicable)
- Turning chains do not count as stitches
- The first stitch of each row should be worked into the top of the last stitch from the previous row
- Instructions written after *asterisks should be repeated as indicated
- Instructions in (round brackets) should be worked in the same stitch
- This pattern is not intended for use as a baby blanket and is not suitable for use in cots / cribs. Babies, infants and small children should not be left unattended with it
Construction
- The blanket is worked from the bottom up
- It’s mainly made from a mixture of half double crochet and bobble stitches (see special stitches), which are arranged to form the words
- There is a row of hdc between each bobble stitch row
- If you find your bobbles are appearing on different sides to one another, go back and check to see if you have missed or added an extra row
- The main body of the blanket pattern is worked from a chart – there are additional chart notes in the pattern instructions
- The border is not included in the chart
Skills Used
- Knowledge of basic crochet stitches, techniques and terminology is assumed
- You will need to be able to read simple crochet charts
- This is a simple pattern, but does require attention to detail to ensure the bobble stitches are worked in the correct place
- After each row of bobbles, I recommend you review your work to check you are still aligned as this will save a lot of frogging if you notice something later!
Materials
Hook:
6mm /J size crochet hook for body of blanket and 5.5mm / I hook for border.
I used my Clover Amour hooks in both cases.
Yarn:
You will need approximately 2070m/2300yds Worsted Weight / Aran / Medium weight yarn.
I used 9 balls (approx 1250g) of Lion Brand Heartland, 100% acrylic, 142g ball = 230m/253yds, in Shade Denau
Substitution Options:
Different fibres and yarns will produce a different finished result.
Using a different yarn weight will alter the size of your finished project.
You may find this post useful when choosing yarn.
Other:
Yarn needle & scissors.
You may wish to block this project, in which case I recommend a blocking matt and pins. Learn more about blocking here.
Measurements & Finished Size
The finished blanket pictured measured 170cm / 68in tall by 100cm / 40in wide.

Special Stitches
Foundation Half Double Crochet (fhdc):
Ch2, yo, insert hook into second chain from hook, yo and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook). *Yo and pull through 1 loop (this creates the base chain of the next fhdc). Yo and pull through all 3 loops to complete the st. To start the next st, yo and insert the hook under the v of the base chain you just created, yo and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook). Repeat from * for required number of sts.
You can find more details on foundation rows including a tutorial in the Crochet Resources Section.
If you struggle with this technique it can be replaced with making a chain of the number of stitches needed plus 1, then work 1hdc in the 2nd ch from hook and each ch across to achieve the required number of sts.
Bobble stitch (bbl)
Yo, insert hook, yo, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook) yo, insert hook into the same place, yo, pull up a loop (5 loops on hook), yo, insert hook into the same place, yo, pull up a loop (7 st on hook) yo, pull through all 7 loops to complete the stitch, move to next stitch.
For the blanket body, all bbl are worked in the BLO
Below is a youtube tutorial created to show the style of bobble stitch used in this pattern, both for left and right handed crocheters.

Gauge
15 sts and 11 rows in 10cm of hdc using a 6mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge.

Note that matching gauge is not essential for this pattern, but variation in your gauge will lead to variations in the finished size of your project.

The Pattern
Body of the blanket
Follow the chart over the page from the bottom up.
RIGHT HANDERS: Follow the chart starting on bottom right (RS)
LEFT HANDERS: Follow the chart starting on the bottom left (RS)
Notes for chart
- The white squares represent hdc (fhdc for Row 1) and the blue squares with b in them are the bobbles
- Row 1 is made from 130 fhdc.
- The stitch count does not change throughout the pattern
- Each row starts with a ch2 which does not count as a stitch
- The bobbles are always worked on the wrong side
The RS is the side where the bobbles point towards you - Bobble stitches are worked in the BLO on the WS of the blanket for the blanket body
- After working the first few rows of the text, check that you are not accidentally making a mirror image of the text on the RS
- The border is not included in the chart
- You might want to print a copy of this chart or the pattern and mark lines off as you go if you find this helpful.
fasten off & sew in ends once the chart is complete and continue to border

Border
For the border you will work in joined rounds. Work bbl stitches through both loops.
Change to 5.5mm hook, with the RS facing you join your yarn in one of the corners;
Round 1 (RS): Ch1 (does not count as a st), work 2sc in the corner stitch then 1sc in each stitch around the top, sides/row-ends and bottom of the blanket, working (2sc, ch2, 2sc) in each subsequent corner. When you reach the end, work the last 2sc in the corner st, ch2 and join to top of first st with a ss, turn.
When working up the sides, I worked 5sc over 4 row-ends which leaves 163 st up each side and 132 across the top and the bottom (including the additional stitch at each corner) and 4 ch2 spaces. You can adjust the number of stitches worked into the row-ends to suit your tension.
Round 2 (WS): Ch3, (1bbl, ch2, 1bbl) in the corner ch2-sp, *1bbl in next st, 1sc in next st; repeat from * around the blanket working through both loops of the sc and working (1bbl, ch2, 1bbl) in each subsequent corner ch2-sp, join to top of first st with a ss, turn.
Row 3: Ch1, 1sc in each st around, working 3sc in the ch2-sp at each of the corners, join to top of first st with a ss.
Fasten off, block to shape if desired and sew in ends
