Fluff it Cardigan: A ribbed, fluffy crochet cardigan pattern
‘Fluff it’ is a light-weight, vertically ribbed, oversized crochet cardigan made from two strands of lace weight fluffy yarn held together.
With mid-length sleeves, a rounded neckline and the option to add buttons, this simple bomber style crochet cardigan is made in one piece from side-to-side with minimal sewing.

This crochet pattern was designed as a follow up to the Fluff it Sweater and uses the same main stitch pattern with a modified construction and shaping. Check out the Fluff it Sweater here.
Skills Used
Whilst I would class this as an intermediate pattern, it is a relatively simple crochet cardigan, made in one piece from side-to-side.
You will be crocheting in rows, holding two strands of laceweight yarn double. The pattern uses post stitches, chainless foundation stitches and slip stitches worked in back loops. Links to tutorials are included for special stitches and techniques used.
- Knowledge of basic crochet stitches, techniques and terminology is assumed
- Working with two strands of yarn held double
- Working consistently with extended front post stitches – I have created a Right handed tutorial and Left handed tutorial for the stitch pattern I use in this design.
- Chainless foundation stitches – tutorial here
- Slip stitching through back loops

I have also created a cropped sample of the cardigan which has longer, three quarter length sleeves to demonstrate how much versatility you can get with a few adjustments to the pattern! (details of the cream version are included in the pattern too)

Materials
Crochet Hook
You will need an 8mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge. Although I usually use my clover amour hooks, for the samples here, I used my 8mm knit pro symphony hook – this hook as a slightly more pointy tip, which I found helped when crocheting post stitches and slip stitching with fluffy yarn.
Yarn Requirements
You will need approximately 1500(1600, 1750, 2000, 2120, 2300, 2500, 2650, 2800)m of lace weight fluffy yarn in total. This is based on holding two yarns double, so if you are working with two different yarns, you should use half the amount for each of the two yarns: 750(800, 875, 1000, 1060, 1150, 1250, 1325, 1400)m of each yarn.
The yarns used in the samples pictured are as follows:
- The pink cardigan (below left) used: 8(8, 9, 10, 11, 11, 12, 13, 14) balls of Drops Kid Silk Unicolour – two strands held double, 25% Silk, 75% Mohair, Shade 62. 25g ball = 210m / 230yds

The cream cropped version (below) with longer sleeves used two different yarns held double:
- 2(2, 3, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4) balls of Isager Alpaca 1, Eco Line undyed, 100% Alpaca. 50g ball = 400m/440yds
- held double with 2(2, 3, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4) balls Zakami Yarns Silk Mohair, undyed, non-super wash, 72% Kid Mohair, 28% Silk. 50g ball = 420m/450yds

Yarn Substitution Options
Different fibres and yarns will produce a different finished result.
If you prefer you can use one 4ply yarn which meets gauge, rather than holding two double. This will change the texture of the fabric somewhat. It is the approach I used in the principle sample of the Fluff it sweater which uses the same stitch pattern.
If you would like ideas for yarn substitutions, you may wish to watch the video I put together to support the Squish it Sweater which looks at ways to substitute fluffy yarns. It starts with a different yarn weight but the same considerations stand.
You may wish to substitute with a non-fluffy or chunkier yarn. If this is the case, swatch carefully and think about how the additional weight will impact the structure of the sweater as it may lead it to stretch across the body and sleeves. Play with your swatch and make your decisions according to that.

Other Materials & Notions
- Button(s) as desired – I used one 22mm button for the pink cardigan
- 3+ stitch markers – two to help with the neckline shaping and one, optionally, to mark the right side as you work. I also recommend a stitch marker for each button
- Yarn needle, scissors and a tape measure
- You may wish to block this project, I gave the finished cardigan a gentle steam block, so a garment steamer would be useful for this. However, you may prefer to block your flat piece before joining it, in which case I recommend a Blocking board and pins. I encourage you to compare the measurements of your work once the second sleeve is complete to the measurements on the schematic to check that your size is accurate. You can then block as needed.
