Festoon; A Crescent Crochet Shawl Pattern

Dora holds a blue and white striped bobble crochet shawl, called ‘festoon’ out at arms length so you can see the full crescent shape.

Festoon is a large, two-colour, heart shaped crescent shawl, with rows of popcorn stitches scattered throughout inspired by strings of twinkling lights on a dark night.

Note that this shawl is designed to be worn draped over the shoulders, not wrapped around the neck.

You can purchase the PDF crochet pattern for the Festoon shawl from Ravelry, Etsy or Love Crafts Crochet.

After the release of the popular Scenic route shawl for spring summer, I have created another crescent crochet shawl pattern, this one more focused on the slow seasons of autumn and winter. (Though it’s one you can wear year round)

There’s just something about crescent shaped crochet shawls that I love.

Whether it’s the way they wrap around the body that make them so easy to wear, the way the fine ends sometimes make little spirals, or just echo of the shape of the moon? I don’t know. But there’s something about them.

If you want to learn more about shawl shapes, this article looks in detail at the different types of shawl construction.

Skills Used

This is a fairly straightforward pattern for crocheters with some experience who can follow written patterns. Maintaining an accurate stitch count will help this project work up easily.

Knowledge of basic crochet stitches, techniques and terminology is assumed.

The pattern uses extended single crochet stitches and popcorn stitches to create the bobbles.

The pattern includes descriptions for these stitches and you can find a link to my extended single crochet tutorial here.

You can also find a full step by step photo and video tutorial for the crochet popcorn stitch here.

There are four common ways to crochet a bobble and the popcorn stitch is probably the most 3d / spherical of them all. You can learn all about the different kinds of bobble stitches here.

You will be working in rows with simple increases and, on the rows of popcorn stitches you’ll be working in the front and back loops in different colours.

Materials

Crochet Hook

You’ll use a 4mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge.

I used a Clover Amour Crochet Hook for this project – one of my favourites – learn more about different crochet hooks here.

The contrast rows use slip stitches in parts, so if you know your tension tends to get tighter when working slip stitches, you may wish to increase your hook size on these row repeats.

Yarn Requirements

You will need approximately 240g or960m/1056yds of 4 ply/fingering weight yarn. 200g in the main colour and about 35-40g in a contrast colour.

The item pictured was made with the following yarns:

Main Colour (MC): 2 x 100g skeins (800m/880yds) Travel Knitter Tatami 4ply, 50% Baby Camel, 50% Silk, 100g = 400m/440yds. Shade; Fireflies.

Contrast Colour (CC): Approximately 35-40g (140-160m/154-176yds) Orchidean Luxury Yarns Mulberino 4 ply. 50% Mulberry Silk, 50% Superwash Merino, 100g = 400m/440yds. Shade; Moonage Daydream.

Yarn Substitution Options

A similar combination of silk blend yarns will achieve similar results. The pattern can be made with a range of 4 ply / fingering weight yarn in different fibres. Different fibres and yarns will produce a different finished result.

You might want to try using 2 x 20g mini skeins (or yarn remnants) for the contrast colour, switching between the two colours. Each contrasting colour ‘Festoon row’ uses about 4-8g of yarn, with each one using more yarn than the previous one, as the shawl grows.

You may find this post useful when choosing a substitute yarn.

Other Materials & Notions

Yarn needle, scissors and a tape measure

1 locking stitch marker / safety pin or equivalent (optional but recommended).

This project benefits from blocking so I recommend a Blocking board and pins or wires.

Learn more about blocking here if you’re not confident about the process.

Finished Size

The finished shawl has a wingspan (length on the neck side) of 145cm/57in and is 30cm/12in deep at the deepest point after a gentle blocking.
