Expansion Scarf
I’ve been having love affair with linked crochet stitches lately and recently released The Corona Summer Vest, which uses linked crochet.
However, I’m aware that a lot of people have not used, or even heard of linked crochet stitches before, so, in addition to the video and photo tutorials I made to accompany Corona, I have created a simple, elegant scarf pattern which is designed to allow you to practice working linked stitches.

Skills Needed
This pattern assumes basic knowledge of working in rows using half double crochet (UK half treble), double crochet (UK treble) and Treble crochet (UK double treble).
You will use linked versions of these basic crochet stitches throughout the pattern and can find a tutorials for the linked half double and double crochet here and the linked treble crochet here
The pattern recommends adding tassels to the end of the scarf. You can find a quick picture tutorial on 5 minute tassel making here
Materials & Sizing
Crochet Hooks
4 mm hook – My preference for hooks is clover amour but I know this is a really personal choice!
If you are new to working linked crochet stitches, you may want to use a bigger hook than recommended for the yarn. This can makes the linked stitches easier to work until you get used to them!
Yarn Requirements
I used 100g (1 hank, 400m, 440yds) of Unbelievawool sparkle sock yarn.
However, this pattern will work with any yarn you have in your stash. I would recommend a 4ply or DK weight. The DK will work up a little larger.
You can use any yarn for this pattern but will need to adjust your stitch and row count accordingly.

Measurement & Finished Size
The finished size of the scarf using the pattern and materials stated is 180cm (72in) long by 20cm (8in) at the widest point
Gauge
Gauge is not essential for this project and the row gauge count varies throughout the pattern as it uses differing stitch heights throughout.
However, the stitch gauge is consistent and is worked to 24 stitches over 10cm using a 4mm hook.
Pattern Notes
- The pattern is written in US terms and worked in rows along the length of the scarf
- Turning chains are used only to work the first linked stitch and not as stitches themselves
- Number in brackets at the end of the row are the number of stitches in that row
- Stitches are worked in consecutive stitches unless stated otherwise

Special stitches
For the decrease section of the scarf, you will work 2 linked stitches together. This is done in a similar way to working standard crochet stitch decreases (e.g. dc2tog) where you work one stitch over two. For clarity, I have outlined how to do this in each case. Note that when I talk about inserting into the horizontal bar to pull up the loop this also refers to the starting chain when you’re working a decrease at the start of a row.
Linked Half Double Crochet 2 Together (lhdc2tog) (UK Linked Half Treble 2 Together)
Insert hook into horizontal bar, yarn over, pull up a loop, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, insert hook into next stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over, pull through all remaining loops to complete the stitch.
Linked Double Crochet 2 together (ldc2tog) (UK Linked Treble 2 together)
Insert hook into first horizontal bar, yarn over, pull up a loop, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops, insert hook into next stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops twice to complete the stitch.
Linked Treble 2 Together (ltr2tog) (UK Linked Double Treble 2 Together)
Insert hook into first horizontal bar, yarn over, pull up a loop, insert hook into second horizontal bar, yarn over, pull up a loop, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops, insert hook into next stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, *yarn over, pull through 2 loops* 3 times to complete the stitch.

The Expansion Crochet Scarf Pattern
You will start by increasing with linked half double, then linked double then linked treble crochet until you reach the widest part. Then you will work 10 rows at this width before decreasing again (mirroring the increase) to the end.
Start with the increase section
Row 1 (rs): Ch3, (does not count as st throughout – use chain to work first linked st throughout) 2lhdc in 3rd ch from hook (2 sts)
Row 2: Ch3, 2lhdc in first st, 1lhdc in next st, turn (3 sts)
Row 3: Ch3, 1 lhdc in next 2 sts, 2lhdc in last st, turn (4 sts)
Row 4: Ch3, 2lhdc in first st, 1lhdc each st to to end (5 sts)
Row 5: Ch3, 1lhdc in each st to 1 st from end, 2lhdc in last st, turn (6 sts)
Rows 6-29: Repeat rows 4 and 5 (30 sts)
Row 30 (ws): Ch3, 2ldc in first st 1ldc in each st to end, turn (31 sts)
Row 31: Ch3, 1ldc in each st to end, turn
Rows 32-59: Repeat rows 30 and 31 (45 sts)
Row 60(ws): Ch4, 2ltr in first st 1ltr in each st to end, turn (46 sts)
Row 61: Ch4, 1ltr in each st to end, turn
Rows 62 – 69: Repeat rows 60 and 61 (50 sts)
Rows 70-79: Ch4, 1ldc in each st to end, turn

Now we will start the decrease
Row 80: Ch4, 1ltr2tog, 1ltr in each st to end, turn (49 sts)
Row 81: Ch4, 1ltr in each st to end, turn
Row 82 – 89: Repeat rows 80 and 81 (45 sts)
Row 90 (ws): Ch3, 2ldc2tog in first st 1ldc in each st to end, turn (44 sts)
Row 91: Ch3, 1ldc in each st to end, turn
Rows 92-119: Rep rows 90 and 91 (30 sts)
Row 120 (ws): Ch3, lhdc2tog, 1lhdc in each st to end, turn (29 sts)
Row 121: Ch3, 1lhdc in each st to last 2 sts, lhdc2tog, turn (28 sts)
Rows 123 – 148: Rep rows 120 and 121 (2 sts)
Row 149: Ch3, lhdc2tog
Fasten off
Finishing
You have the option to work a row of single crochet along the row ends, but I like the look of the raw edges. However, I did block the scarf to neaten out the decreases. A light steam would also work (depending on your fabric – never apply direct heat to acrylic yarn unless you’re intending to ‘break’ / melt it!).
Sew in ends
Add a tassel to each end of the scarf (click here for my 5 minute tassel tutorial)
Adjustments
You can easily adjust the length of your scarf by adding or removing rows.
You can increase the width of your scarf by adding more increase rows to make it wider.
