Is crochet a superpower?

If I could have a superpower, I think it would be something really practical and boring, like being able to clean the bathroom and put the washing away with a clap and a click, like Mary Poppins. I’ve never been one for delusions of grandeur!

I mean, reading people’s minds would be amazing, but you might not always like what you find. Then there is invisibility, well frankly that is just a bit creepy-stalker inducing. Super strength and ninja moves sounds a bit tiring.

Being a super brain would be pretty awesome, but then I like meeting and learning from people who are way cleverer than me, and let’s face it, no one really likes a know-it-all. Flying would be spectacular but you know, planes and air defence systems.

Teleporting, now that would be helpful, helpful to me anyway at the end of the day when I’m stuck in traffic, so not really altruistic in the way a hero should be.

Having no fear would be the simply life changing one. It would totally allow me the freedom to go and do all that stuff I’m scared of, to show others it’s possible to achieve (there’s the hero bit). The flip side is that I would likely go and do something stupid like jumping out of a plane without a parachute, you know, just to see what would happen.

I’m not sure there are any superpowers without downsides… I guess that’s the lesson, no one has it all! (But having a sparkling bathroom day in day out… that is the path to happiness my friends!)

What you can do is to try to be the most super-you you can be. We can all develop a superpower of our very own.

Since new year, I’ve been really focusing on my crochet designs and what I want to do with this blog. You haven’t seen much of it come to fruition yet but these things take time, a lot more time than one would think, but believe me, there is lots going on under the surface; the swans legs are paddling away!

It may be optimistic to say that the worst of the winter weather is behind us but yesterday, despite getting drenched on the walk to my yoga class, I noticed that the edge to the wind had dropped away. You wait, it will most likely snow next week now I’ve put that in writing.

My point is that the super chunky mittens have stayed in the draw for a while and I’m eking my way into fingerless gloves. This is why I’m releasing my Mighty Mitts pattern now.

Disclaimer: These mitts won’t give you actual super powers, but they will keep you cosy and still let you use your phone (free those fingers) whilst you’re out and about! Really when you think about it, all one needs to change the world these days is a phone… Okay so I may be stretching the metaphor a little here… can we just call it poetic licence?

The Mighty Mitts are great stash busters as they only use around 50g of DK yarn. The pattern is written in Women’s sizes S/M, M/L and X1/X2 (Men’s S/M). The design is actually unisex and it’s easy to increase the size to fit any hand (advice on this is given in the pattern). I personally find men really hard to crochet for so am making a couple of extra pairs of these for gifts.

I used about half a ball of Women’s institute premium acrylic yarn in yellow for these, which is the same yarn I used for my Up and Over Poncho. It’s available on 3 for 2 in Hobbycraft so is great value for money, but still nice to work with and soft on the skin. Plus it’s pretty hardy being an acrylic so it ticks all the boxes for me. (They aren’t paying me for this, I have just really liked all the WI yarns I have tried so far!)

These guys also look great with colour work. I made one pair in strips and, despite looking a little like they belong in IKEA, I love the way the stitch pattern works in two colours. The pattern is written in a single colour with guidance for mixing it up.
