I’ve been thinking a lot this week about the way I channel my energy and attention and if I’m making the best use of both.
Am I caring about the right things?
Energy is finite. Whether it’s the fossil fuels under the ground or our physical and emotional efforts, now, more than ever, we need to be thoughtful about where and how we expend that precious resource. Some day the tank is going to run dry and we don’t want to reach the last drop only to realise how much we wasted.
My best ever boss once told me I needed to ‘Care Less’. It was such an unexpected but wonderful piece of advice and has stuck with me ever since.
Over the past 10 days or so, I have been disproportionately distracted by a challenge I’m facing. It’s taking up a lot more brain space than it really warrants, so in an attempt to check myself (before I wreck myself), I’ve been making a note of what I have found in the centre of my thoughts and focus and deciding if it’s something I want to be there or not.
Do I want to give more energy to it or less? Because as hard as it may feel sometimes we can choose what we care about.
Here’s my note to self about what to keep an eye on.
Care less about…
What people think
What you think people might think
What you look like
Other people’s opinions
What drags you down
Having cool stuff
Being who you think you should be
Saving your face from wrinkles
How people might react
Following the crowd
What might happen and trying to predict the future
Dust and mess
Looking like an idiot
Care more about…
What you think of yourself
What is true
How you feel
Developing your understanding and empathy
What what brings you joy
Experiencing the now
Finding out who you are
Saving the planet
Following your own path
How you communicate and react
Giving it a try
What is happening in this moment
Creating and getting mess
I loved this little exercise. I even set up a little note in my phone to remind myself when I was wasting energy in the wrong place.
If you’re a constant worrier, try it for a week – whenever you find yourself caring about something that doesn’t serve you, think about what you could be caring about instead. Decide where that energy is better spent and put it there
This picture hangs in my bedroom. I had it commissioned by an amazing watercolour artist called Sam Cannon which some money I got when my gran died (sorry for the jaunty angle, it was the only way I could avoid the reflection of the window opposite!). I think she would have got behind the sentiment 100% and it’s kind of an illustration of what I’ve been trying to achieve this week.
I’d love to hear how you get on – what do you need to care less about?
P.S. I accidentally hit publish on this post. I normally post these blogs on a Tuesday but instead of recalling it, I decided to care less about my timetable!! 🙂
